Step Up to Leadership Training

HRM Volunteer Services offers a FREE 10 session course which was developed by volunteers for volunteers. The course covers a wide range of topics and is intended to help you develop leadership skills and build strong communities.

The first half of the course explores:

personality types
team work
group dynamics
diversity
planning for your passion

 The second half of the course provides information on:

creating a non-profit organization
Board legalities and practicalities
effective meetings
conflict resolution
public speaking 

The program has a full, well rounded agenda to provide the necessary tools and techniques to create effective leadership and community involvement.

It's Your Opportunity

We are seeking applications from individuals interested in serving on the volunteer Board of Directors for the
Capital District Health Authority. Capital Health is the largest integrated academic health district in the Maritimes. It provides core adult health services to 40 per cent of Nova Scotians, and specialist services to the province and region. The district operates 39 facilities in 10 sites in the Halifax Regional Municipality and the western portion of Hants County.

Board members are also appointed to the Board of Directors of the Queen Elizabeth II Health Sciences Centre and the Board of Management Nova Scotia Hospital.

As a prospective member, you may have:
• Financial experience,
• Strong legal experience,
• Capital development experience,
• Business acumen relative to large scale corporate operations, and
• An understanding of health care quality.

You will have:
• Demonstrated community leadership.

You are:
• Committed to working with board members, executive management, community health boards and other stakeholders to achieve healthier people and communities.

Board appointments are selected through two separate processes. One-third of the members are appointed
directly by the Minister of Health and Wellness. Two thirds are appointed by the Minister from a list of names submitted by the health authority’s nominating committee, comprising local individuals representing the district’s seven Community Health Boards (CHB's).

Opportunities to represent:
◆ Southeastern area (incl. Eastern Passage, Cow Bay,Cole Harbour, Cherry Brook/Lake Loon, North
Preston, East Preston, Mineville, Lawrencetown);
◆ Eastern Shore Musquodoboit area;

◆ Chebucto West area;
◆ West Hants / Uniacke area
