What is Horticultural Therapy & Therapeutic Horticulture? The fundamentals of Horticultural Therapy (HT) & Therapeutic Horticulture (TH) will be covered including how these relate to gardening, the directed horticultural activities used for specific health outcomes, populations who benefit from HT, and therapeutic landscapes.

Of interest to people using gardening with seniors, children, veterans, community gardens as well as health workers, horticulturists, and therapists.

Can gardening be more than a feel good activity?

Explore programming in health care settings that demonstrate how horticulture can be used for specific health outcomes for a range of populations; seniors, children, bereaved, veterans, people with physical and mental disabilities and wellness groups. Current applications of horticultural therapy and therapeutic horticulture in health and human service settings will shed light on connecting horticulture and health.

Lesley Fleming is a Registered Horticultural Therapist with a private practice in Florida. She is a Director of the American Horticultural Therapy Association, author and Editor in Chief of AHTA News Magazine. She is a member of the Common Roots Urban Farm Advisory Committee.

Janice Morrison is a Horticultural Therapist specializing in programs with cancer populations. She has 30 years experience as a horticulturist/nurseryman/businesswoman in Cape Breton, sits on several boards related to protecting the natural environment and is a member of the Common Roots Urban Farm Advisory Committee

Win Fame and Fortune: Enter the Common Roots Urban Farm Kiosk Design Contest

Partners for Care and Capital Health are excited to announce a contest to design the information kiosk for the Common Roots Urban Farm!


We're looking for great ideas from design professionals, new to the design biz folks, and aspiring wanna-be's. The contest is now open and entries are welcome until July 1, 2012.

Finalists will be selected by a panel of design gurus, community workers and Capital Health staff. The public will be invited to vote for their favorite design, with the winner being announced on July 17, 2012.

There are prizes for the finalists and the winner will receive $250.
