Hello Everyone,
My name is Dr. Ingrid Waldron. I am an Assistant Professor in the School of Nursing at Dalhousie University. I am conducting the third phase of a research project entitled North End Matters: A Multi-Phase Project that commenced with a research study and report on the health issues facing African Nova Scotians in North End, Halifax. This was followed by a video, community event and live-streamed talk show in 2012.
The third phase of North End Matters: A Multi-Phase Project began in July of this year. This phase of the project brings together community members, faculty, research staff, consultants, the North End Community Health Center, the Community Health Board, and an African Nova Scotian Advisory Committee to conduct a pilot project that seeks to impact public policy and decision making around the social determinants of health in the African Nova Scotian community in the North End of Halifax.
The project will use the People Assessing their Health (PATH) process to engage African Nova Scotian residents, agency professionals and business owners in the North End in discussions on health priorities in the North End. One outcome of this process is the development of a Community Health Impact Assessment Tool (CHIAT) that will be owned by the African Nova Scotian community in the North End. The CHIAT is an advocacy tool that can be used to evaluate policies, projects, services and programmes. It can also be used to suggest actions that could be taken to maximize the benefits (positive effects) and minimize the harm (negative effects) of any project, policy or program in the North End.
We are interested in hearing what African Nova Scotian North End residents (including youth), agency professionals, business owners and other individuals have to say about what they think makes and keeps people healthy in the North End. To that end, we will soon be holding community consultations to discuss the project, tool and the health of North End community members. If you are an African Nova Scotian residing in the North End, please come out to these community consultations. Refreshments will be served. The dates, times and location for the community consultations will be announced soon.
You are also invited to attend the monthly project meetings. These meetings are open to the public, including North End residents and individuals who do not reside in the North End. Please attend these meetings if you are interested in learning more about the project. Please see the information below for dates, times and locations for our upcoming monthly project meetings.
