African Canadian Transition Program September 2011

Still Accepting Applications for September 2011
The African Canadian Transition Program (ACTP) offered at the Akerley Campus Nova Scotia Community College:

1. What is this program all about?
Research proves Black students learn best when they can relate to the material and see themselves represented. The ACTP reflects Black culture in its teaching style and curriculum; it works to enhance skills in critical thinking, problem-solving, time management, budgeting, communications, and stress management. Program Participants also gain credits in courses such as Math and Science for the Nova Scotia High School Graduation Diploma for Adults.

2. Am I eligible?
You can apply to this program if you:
• Self-identify as being Black/from the African Canadian Community (of African descent)
• Are 19 years of age or older
• Do not have a recognized high school diploma
• Have been out of public school for at least twelve consecutive months
• Have literacy and numeracy skills at the Grade 10 level, or above (assessment to follow application)
• Are mature and committed to learning
• Intend to complete the Nova Scotia High School Graduation Diploma for Adults

3. What else should I know?
There is no tuition. The program begins in September and ends in May at NSCC’s Akerley Campus in Dartmouth. This is a full-time program and, therefore, regular attendance is required. To provide opportunities for African Nova Scotians across the province, five seats are reserved for participants from outside the Halifax Metro region. In such cases, we may be able to assist with your transportation and living expenses. For all other applicants living in HRM, although there is no monthly living allowance, we may be able to provide a bus pass.
