An urban farm will sprout this spring on the site of the former Queen Elizabeth High School.
Partners for Care of Capital Health and Dalhousie University’s Cities and Environment Unit hosted a public meeting and open house late last year and heard strong support to use the land at the corner of Bell Road and Robie Street as a space to grow healthy food and demonstrate gardening skills.
“We were extremely pleased to see a diverse group of people and organizations in our community respond with such energy and commitment to the idea of developing an urban farm on the QEH property,” said Roma Dingwell, project manager with Partners for Care. “This land presents a true opportunity to promote good health, education and community involvement on Common land in the city centre.”
The roughly 2.5 acres of land will transfer to Capital Health once demolition of the school is complete. At some point in the future it will be used for hospital expansion.
To move the urban farm project from an idea to reality, the Cities and Environment Unit is again collaborating to host a series of planning meetings.
The first session on Program Development, focusing on what will be produced and how, will be held Wednesday, Jan. 26 from 5:30-8 p.m. in the Citadel/Cunard Room, Hotel Atlantica, 1980 Robie St.
The second session on Farm Operations and Governance, will be held Thursday, Feb. 3 from 5:30-8 p.m. in the Citadel/Cunard Room, Hotel Atlantica, 1980 Robie St.
Dates and locations for sessions on Food Distribution and Design Development will be announced in the future.
All are invited. Those unable to attend the planning sessions can provide any input to participate@cdha.nshealth.ca or through our social media channels facebook.com/CapitalHealth or twitter.com/Capital_Health
