Bicycle Master Plan Public Engagement Continues

Public Engagement Session #2

Network & Route Design

Date: Wednesday, February 16, 2011

Time: Drop in: 4:30pm - 5:30pm

Working session: 5:30pm - 7:30pm

Location: Dalhousie Student Union Building,

Room 303, 6136 University Avenue
Dalhousie University, Saint Mary’s University,

Capital Health and the IWK Health Centre are working together to advance their sustainability goals through the development of a Bikeways Plan for the Urban Halifax Institutional District. The District, encompassing the lands controlled by all four institutions on the Halifax Peninsula,is a major regional destination for staff, students and visitors. There is great potential to shift a significant number of commuter trips from cars to bicycles through investment in improved bicycle infrastructure and facilities.

There are a range of initiatives currently underway on the peninsula that highlight the interest in and potential for cycling as a transportation choice. There is a need, however, to think strategically about how the four institutions can work with other partners and government to improve the quality of facilities, services and infrastructure for cyclists.

Over the next three months, planners with Dalhousie’s Cities & Environment Unit will be working with the four institutions and the community at large to develop the Bikeways Plan. Building on existing plans and policy, such as HRM’s Active Transportation Function Plan, we will engage staff, students, visitors and community members in establishing a bold vision for the future of cycling in the District, and prioritizing investments in new infrastructure and facilities. The newly formed Bicycle Action Committee (BAC) will guide the process.

Please join us at the public sessions to share your ideas, or provide your input to:

Stories & Facts: How should the media present medical science?

Is the role of the media to present medical facts or medical stories? Neuroscientific and genetic discoveries are of great interest to the public. They hold the potential to cure many diseases and behaviours. But are the headlines telling us the best medical science news or the best stories. This café will explore the role of the media, academics and the public in the reporting of factual and accurate health science.

Do media stories help or hinder public understanding of medical science?

7:00 – 9:00 pm
Wednesday March 2, 2011
Murphy’s Cable Wharf Restaurant 1751 Lower Water St., Halifax

Panelists:

Alan Fine, Director, Neuroscience Institute, Dalhousie University
Susan Newhook, Assistant Professor, King’s College School of Journalism

Do you get physical?

How physically active are we in the Halifax Regional Municipality? We’re looking to find out… Ipsos Reid to Survey HRM Residents on Physical Activity.
The marketing research firm Ipsos Reid will be conducting a municipal physical fitness survey for the HRM. The telephone survey will be conducted in February, 2011 and will canvass 300 HRM (150 males and 150 females) residents aged 18 years and older.

“The data we get from this survey will be very important in informing Stepping Up, Physical Activity Strategy for the Halifax Region.” Says Sarah MacKeigan, Project Lead for Stepping Up. “It will answer key questions around the community’s level of physical activity, satisfaction with current recreation offerings, barriers to physical activity participation and what services the municipality and its partners may be able provide to assist in making physical activity an easy choice, particularly for inactive people.”

Specific survey topics will also include:

• Regularity, type and duration of citizen’s physical activity.

• Motivation for participating/not participating in physical activity.

• Satisfaction with municipal recreation facilities, program, and services.

• Attitudes towards user fees for recreational programs and services.

• Level of children’s physical activity.

Responses are anonymous and individual results will not be used in any way.

The survey is sponsored in cooperation with the Nova Scotia Department of Health and Wellness.

Crime Prevention Grants

The province of Nova Scotia is supporting projects to prevent and reduce crime in Nova Scotia. The Department of Justice is helping to build safer communities by funding community-based activities, projects, and programs that address the roots of crime.

"We are working to prevent crime by supporting community organizations with funding for equipment, materials, and other basic items," said Justice Minister Ross Landry.

The one-time Community Crime Prevention and Reduction Grant Program provides grants between $1,000 and $5,000.

"Whether it provides a family skate hour at the local rink or new basketball hoops for a youth club, this funding helps address the roots of crime at the community level, in very practical ways," said Mr. Landry.

Last year, the crime prevention grants program supported projects dealing with youth activities and conferences, Internet safety, victim support and awareness, seniors' safety, aboriginal youth and a crime prevention association. Online applications describing proposals and requests for funding will be accepted until March 7. For more information and application forms, visit www.gov.ns.ca/just/prevention .
