Post a Secret

On January 20, 2010, Adsum for Women & Children will host Frank Warren of www.postsecret.com at the Rebecca Cohn Auditorium, Dalhousie Arts Centre. Warren is founder of PostSecret, a community art project he started five years ago that has since blown into an online phenomenon in which nearly 500,000 people from around the world have shared their deepest secrets via postcard. The cards are displayed on Warren’s web site, www.postsecret.com

“I think the very act of sharing a secret, whether it’s whispering it into a friend’s ear or letting it go to a stranger on a postcard can be transformative,” Warren says. “I get e-mails quite frequently from people who talk about the changes that have come about by releasing a secret to a stranger. It’s not the act itself, (but) it puts them on a longer journey where they get to where they need to be.”

Adsum’s objective is to bring a unique event to Halifax that benefits the larger community as much as it benefits Adsum. Postsecret provides a venue for Adsum to reach beyond our historic circle of support to the wider community, especially youth. Aside from exposing Haligonians to this community art project, we will raise awareness of mental health and the many resources available in HRM and beyond. Frank Warren’s presentation also serves to diminish stigma, as he helps us to acknowledge that we all carry secrets … that we are all alike in our humanity.

Frank Warren’s stop at the Rebecca Cohn coincides with the publication of his fifth book, “Confessions on Life, Death, & God,” which recently topped the New York Times’ best-seller list. This is an event that you won’t want to miss in Halifax! Tickets are on sale now - $30 general admission, $20 for students. Call 1.800.874.1669.
