Ages 10 – 18, individuals or groups.
Have trash collecting around your house? Turn trash into treasure! The challenge is to create a functional item or a piece of artwork from things that would otherwise be discarded. A bunch of old newspapers can become clothing; an old pair of jeans can become curtains or pillows; a sculpture can be created out of bottle caps!
Whatever your idea we want you to create either a functional item, or a piece of artwork, from things that would otherwise have been discarded.
Entry forms and submission guidelines can be found at halifaxpubliclibraries.ca.
Submissions will be accepted from March 1st to April 2nd, 2012.
Shortlisted entries will be displayed at a Judging and Showcase event for others to see and gain inspiration. Prizes will be awarded by a panel of community judges, who will be looking for the creativity, practicality and originality of the item as well as the percentage that has been transformed, reused or recycled.

May 7-National Child and Youth Mental Health Day
How You Can Help Improve Mental Health Resources For Your Family
On May 7th youth, parents, caregivers, professionals, service providers and those interested in child and youth mental health are invited to help define what Family Smart could mean to our Nation. Participate to help us define the outcomes that are meaningful to families and how Family Smart can help us reach those outcomes.
Sites across Canada will be connected during parts of the day through webcasting and the dialogue across provinces and territories will be captured using Graphic Recording.
We have lots of activities planned to keep you engaged (and fed) during your experience, but understand that it may be difficult to be on location the entire time. We encourage you to come for as long as you can, and would love to collect your input.

The hope is for 'Family Smart' to become an recognized identifier (like Health Check), used to identify and endorse programs, practices, policies, services and research that families have identified as meaningful and helpful to them.

Upcoming Healing Hands Lecture Series - focussing on mental health issues of school age children
Healing Hands Mental Health Association of Nova Scotia will be putting on a series of six (6) lectures on various mental health issues relating to school age children. The lectures will all be held on Saturdays (April 2, 9, 16, May 7, 14, and June 4, 2011) in the Multi-Purpose Room of the Bloomfield Centre, 2681 Agricola St., Halifax, NS.
The schedule of workshops is as follows:
April 2 — Dr. Stanley Kutcher, Psychiatrist with IWK Hospital — New Resources to Improve Youth Mental Health Services in Nova Scotia
April 9 — Ms. Carole Shirley, Psychologist with Roth Associates — Learning Disabilities: Identification and Remediation in School Going Children
April 16 — Dr. S.S Sodhi, Retired Dalhousie University Professor and Psychologist with Roth Associates — Making School Going Children Resilient: A Review of the Research
May 7 — Dr. Penny Corkum, Professor with the Dept. of Psychology, Dalhousie University — Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder (ADHD) in School Going Children: Identification and Remediation; Issues and Treatment
May 14 — Dr. Sabina Abidi, Psychiatrist with IWK Hospital — Depression in School Going Children
June 4 — Dr. Virginia Walford, Psychologist with Roth Associates — Grieving and Grief Therapy For School Going Children

National Child and Youth Mental Health Day - May 7, 2010
Join Our Community Celebration!
An opportunity for youth, families and staff to participate in a community mental health and addictions awareness event. Participants will have the opportunity to attend information sessions, speak to our knowledgeable staff and representatives from our community partners as well as participate in discussion panels. The purpose of this event is to educate and create awareness about mental illness and addictions so that we may reduce the stigma associated with these illnesses.
Mental health challenges affect 20% of Canadian Children and Youth... that is over 2 million children and adolescents in Canada. Mental health problems can happen to any young person regardless of age or circumstance.

Move Your World
The annual Move Your World Youth Symposium is a three-day, eye-opening event for Atlantic Canadians aged 15-18. The conference brings together a diverse group of youth in a rural setting to learn about global issues and develop skills in an interactive, exciting educational experience.
The fourth annual Move Your World returns this November at Camp Seggie, Rice Point, PEI!

Participant application deadline is September 25th, 2009.
Applications will be reviewed and applicants informed of their acceptance into the program the following week. Accepted applicants must confirm their attendance and submit a registration form and a $50 fee by October 9th, 2009. Scholarships and travel bursaries are available on a limited basis for those in need.
